Is Having Babies Immoral?

So I read this article that literally came out and said that “having kids is immoral” because they believe it’s bad for Planet Earth.

I guess I’m not that surprised really. Because I know this message is being broadcast in the media worldwide everyday. I’ve heard it. I’ve seen it. It’s more than implied by pop culture. It’s in the movies, in the news, it’s even in the church. Here’s the op-ed to the article. If you want to read the original there is a link to it in the op-ed.

Here’s the Link.

I really don’t believe that most people actually believe this yet. But it’s a thing that’s out there, a little voice in our ears, that to me feels like it grows louder all the time. And honestly, it’s one of the reasons I write this blog. Because having children is one of the most natural, common sense things that our bodies were created to do. Our bodies were created in the image of God, by God. And the very 1st thing He is ever recorded as saying to the very 1st people Adam and Eve, was “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” Genesis 1:28

Not too long ago I had an encounter with someone that was genuinely concerned, he seemed troubled even about global warming. He made some comments as he was leaving my presence, so I paused briefly wondering what, if anything should even be said. Because I didn’t agree with what he was saying, and I wanted to say something to lift his spirits, but I wasn’t sure it was good timing- or if it would even matter, but just serve to agitate him more. I also thought, I’m not an expert on global warming, so why would anyone listen to me anyways? As I thought about it, I realized that I do personally know an expert on weather that doesn’t believe in global warming, but says it’s a bunch of propaganda.

But honestly, I don’t form my opinions on what the so called experts of the moment are saying.

If you’d like to read more scientific explanations by bible believing christian’s that also happen to be scientists here’s a link to an in depth look at global warming and what God has to say about it in His Word.

While I don’t let the trendy threat of Global Warming keep me up at night, I do believe that mankind was given the earth and all within it to take care of and tend to. God actually uses much stronger words in the Bible. He says in Genesis 1:26-28

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.

I believe we are to take dominion over the earth in the way a homeowner or a gardener would tend to their land to make it produce where it normally would not. Or make it hospitable where it was not before. But in the same vein, if people are going to create large amounts of toxic waste with all the fancy technology they are producing they need to not be lazy about disposing of it so we don’t pollute our environment. Heavy metal toxicity in the food, ground, and water is nothing to mess with.

Going back to the belief that having more babies is immoral because it strains the planet…I got off on a tangent because there are other issues connected to this idea. It basically stems from the idea that Global Warming is upon us and that we need a lighter, lesser carbon footprint on the earth. It’s pretty much the exact opposite of what God says in His Word, the Bible.

Here are a few of the things God says on this subject…

Genesis 8:22 “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

Psalm 119: 89-91 “Forever, O LORD, your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness is unto all generations: you have established the earth, and it abides. They continue this day according to your ordinances: for all are your servants.”

So to be clear, is having babies actually immoral? No. It’s not only morally right, and in all ways a normal, orderly and common sense way for 2 married people to live. God came up with the whole idea, and actually uses it as a prophetic picture of Himself and His people.

Ephesians 5:30-32 “For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
