Something that I see constantly: people on Facebook all day posting stuff. Some of it is such good curated content. They found it through one of their friends, and then posted it for all their other friends and their “curated content” spreads on and on. And so much of it I’m really thankful for because it brings a smile to my heart, makes me laugh out loud, or uplifts and inspires me. But how much of it is actually getting out to other people because of Facebook’s whims? My friends in question don’t usually care. They post because it’s in their heart and something they just naturally want to do. When I tell my friend that they should start a blog, they usually just shrug it off with a “Ya, ok. I probably should but I don’t have the time.” Sort of answer. Then they go off to their soul sucking 9 to 5 job and spend some more of their precious life being unfulfilled. I usually try to point out that they are already doing most of what a blogger does. Creating and curating content and sharing it to social media. Some people must spend all day on Facebook.
- What if they redirected that energy into their own blog?
- Because only Facebook is getting paid for all my friends time that they are spending sharing; inspiring, interesting and uplifting content.
I think I understand why most people hesitate to start a blog or build a website. It seems daunting and technical. And it can be. But there’s so much help out there now a days. I’ve taken so many free blogging classes. And I still felt stuck and unsure. Then I came upon 2 resources that changed my thinking, and lit my blogging path. The first resource was a free class through lifestyle blogger Abby Lawson from www.justagirlandherblog.com. I went through the free class, but halfway through I knew I wanted to know as much as I could from her and so I just went ahead and bought her ebook and Building a Framework course. It came with interviews from experts on a pretty broad range of blogging topics. I loved it’s simple yet elegant style and as I read it I just felt so uplifted and confident that I was going in the right direction. I felt also that even though blogging might not be super simple, it really was possible and with an investment of time I really could even make an income from it someday.
Another course that really really demystified blogging and building an online business for me was Elite Blog Academy by Ruth Soukup. This is like a college course in it’s intensity. But I love how she gives you assignments and encourages you to do things in a step by step progression. It was so what I needed. And I realized that I’m such a rebel sometimes. But I’ve decided I’m going to take this serious and go through each and every assignment as though I were being given a grade. It gives me a sense of direction and confidence that I’m going to do this. I’m going to finish this. I guess my dreams just needed some discipline.
Unfortunately, Elite Blog Academy only opens once per year, usually in February. Also, like a college course, it’s expensive. But unlike a college course, it’s actually useful. Haha! Seriously though. If you know that you know that you want to blog- then you should be as serious about it as if you were doing school the old fashioned, go-to-college way. That way is far, far, far more expensive and complicated. And almost impossible for moms needing to stay at home with their little ones. Which is a precious and honorable calling. Blogging does not necessarily pull you out of your calling as a wife and mother like so many other forms of “work” for income.
So if you want a course that will help you through setting up your blog from start to finish, then I recommend Abby Lawson’s course Building A Framework. The 3rd revision has just been released and I’m going through it again because they’ve added more content and I’m constantly learning new stuff. They also have a free webinar if you’re interested:
